Back on Course

time to update

I've taken on some new responsibilibilibilities with GSO and GAT so I'm going to be swamped, but regardless I'll grind out some documentation. I've started a new animation, polishing an old, working on a physical computing project, collaborating on a game, and preparing for the electric art show. I'll have some stuff on the animation up here over the course of the week to try an steer its direction.
Cheers Ryan

Renders

So it's time for a content update. I've been doing a lot of test renders, animations, research and variety of other things with lightwave that do not involve inflattables. Although inflattables are all the rage for installation peices these days. I've developed a grind relationship with Lightwave but fortunatley I was built to grind. Even though it crashes frequently, I can still get lucky and batter it with trial and error to get results.

He's not as cute as he looks. He will be important to my animation in a cluster. Not so much a canary as much as he looks like an eagle though. Still entertaining regardless

This was an experiment in lighting before soome more textures and hair were added. The lighting for this first scene isn't all that bad, but at this point I still feel I need to do more experiments.

I moved into plaing with hair styles and getting a hold of the SasLite plugin. His hair looks a bit too classic. I'm hoping to make the character's hair suited to a lower class so this will not work.

Fuzzy hair might be the way to go if I can wield it better. Unfortunatley this character has hair like a muppet. I'll have to set it proper.

This looks better and reminds me of a janitor I used to know.

Ok now lets see that in the previous scene's lighting with the hair in place

And now from a bit further away

Now that long hair might look good on a the female character

Playing with textures and lighting

I dig the light spots

I textured the floor but I'm not sure if I can see it

I was playing with lighting and this looks a bit like dawn lighting

The lighting and camera angle have a pretty dramatic effect on the character's appearance.

This was a procedural screw up on the couch that hexed me for a while. Remember that naming conventions are very important to remebering what you are doing.

I looked up some specs on HDR lighting an attempted playing with it

This may be a bit more dark and might play into the sardonic image

The character looks like a manequin in this lighting

I brought out too much light in this but at least the eyes are visible

Looks like night lighting

Nightish lighting with HDR as well

Looks like daylight lighting

Looks like late night lighting

Looks like late night using caustics

This was a mistake created accidentally while playing with the amount of direct lights in the scene. Looks like a Psycadelic Ryan Larkin render. Oops.

Last render of the night but not the final there will be more

Animations

Initial trucking of the scene, first animation

Kicking back a brewsky in the basement

The hair works great. The end is a glitch expeinced when the character moves a great distance within a 1/30th of a second. This is not visible in a black background environment where the camera trails the character

Glitchy hair collision upon being at rest. Possibly too much spring

drinking beer from being

If get's old... turn it inside out

In the past few months, a lot has been happening. I'm in the Graduate program of Computer Art at Syracuse University. Everyone at Syracuse has been great and I've been producing my best work yet. I have also been granted a job as a teaching assistant. I teach in three courses currently, two of which are introductory 3d courses with Diana Salles and one 3d intermediate/advanced with the King of CG himself, Heath Hanlin. The students are really fun and I at least think they enjoy having me. We'll see because next week I will be giving out surveys, so they can evaluate me.

My work at Geerlings and Wade was wondeful as well. For the past year and a half, I've had the opportunity to work on some killer web development and learn some basic .net skills. Having said that, I'm itching to get back to making some art.

I applied for a fellowhip to pay for my schooling. I am very excited because if I can get this fellowship, it will pretty much pay for the rest of my schooling. I'll have to learn voodoo so I can hex the intense competition.

So, this is a little bit of a hectic time, and updates might be a little sparse. I hope to begin posting project documentation and research as soon as I have time.

In the meantime, I'll try to flesh out the site.
